Good News Friday: A big week in the EV World

Posted by Liv Serrage on 5th Dec 2025

This week isn’t just National EV week – it’s been a landmark moment for the UK EV movement. From record-breaking adoption rates to exciting government incentives, here’s why EV adoption is accelerating faster than ever.

1. EV sales are surging

According to an article from the independent, one in five new cars sold in the UK year to date have been electric. That’s a 16.5% year on year (YoY) increase. This highlights the growing momentum in EV adoption amongst consumers.

2. Big savings for UK EV drivers

A study by the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) reveals that UK drivers can save up to £1,500 per year by switching to an EV— that’s £540 more than their counterparts in Germany.

This big difference doesn’t come from the price of petrol in both countries. In fact, the average price of petrol in both countries is about 15p per mile. Instead, it’s driven by how UK households use flexible electricity tariffs, like Octopus Intelligent, and smart meters. These tariffs means that the average UK household can charge for as little as 7p per kWh compared to a much larger 29p per kWh in Germany. In terms of miles, that’s 2p per mile in the UK vs 7p in Germany. It’s a big difference and one that makes the UK ones of the best-value EV markets in Europe (woo!)
