Why does the grid need to be balanced?

Electricity demand is on the up
Put simply, electricity demand is rising fast. Most of the things we use every day are switching from gas or petrol to electricity like ovens, cars, boilers and even data centres.
If loads of people plug in and charge up at the same time, it creates big peaks that our grid wasn’t originally designed to handle.

Renewable energy is naturally changeable
2025 was a record year for renewable energy in the UK, with wind alone generating more than 30% of UK’s electricity. But:

  • The wind doesn’t always blow
  • The sun doesn’t always shine
  • The output can change very quickly

Our grid must adapt alongside the fluxes in renewable energy generation to ensure that our electricity supply is reliable. If demand can’t adapt when renewables dip, operators are forced to:

  • Use fossil fuel plans

How does my electric car help balance the grid?

The flexibility you provide through your plugged in EV acts as virtual power station. Allowing vecFLEX to pause your charge during peaks, eases pressure on the grid without the need to dig up roads or build new substations.

Every charger we can onboard to vecFLEX gives our grid a little more breathing space and opportunity for real stability as well an opportunity to build reliance on renewable energy sources without huge infrastructure costs.

Are EVs a risk to the grid?

This is one of the biggest myths about EVs. Yes, EVs use energy to charge but they’re one of our biggest weapons to combat increased demand.

Your smart charger plus vecFLEX means a more reliable, stable grid for everyone.

How does my EV charger become an energy asset?

Simple! Fill out the vecFLEX onboarding form, we’ll check your eligibility and, if you’re successful, we’ll give you access to vecFLEX.

You’ll receive confirmation via email and SMS. Once you’ve received communications from us, just use your usual charging schedule and we’ll do the rest.

Can I still use my energy supplier?

Yes! VecFLEX integrates with all major energy providers including:

  • E-on
  • Scottish power
  • OVO energy
  • Octopus energy
  • British Gas
  • Good Energy
  • SO Energy
  • EDF

IMPORTANT: vecFLEX doesn’t integrate with intelligent energy tariffs that also control devices like Octopus Intelligent GO.

How will I receive my reward?

You’ll receive a stripe link via email every 30 days* from flex@axle.energy with the sender name “vecFLEX payments via Axle Energy"

Just note that your funds will only remain in your account for 1 year. You must withdraw them within a year.

For more details see our terms and conditions page.

Who are Axle Energy?

Axle Energy are evec’s technology partner for vecFLEX. They work behind the scenes to help us decide the best times to charge based on grid conditions. This allows us to support the grid while rewarding you and, of course, making sure your car is always ready when you need it. If you’d like to find out more about axle energy and the incredible work they’re doing to decarbonise the grid click here.

It’s a win-win

vecFLEX opts you into the UK’s grid services scheme (run by the electricity system operator, formerly National Grid ESO) which rewards you for using electricity more flexibly and balancing the grid. It really is that simple.

vecFLEX FAQs

How will this impact my charging?

In short, it won’t.

Once you’re onboarded, you’ll setup your charging schedule as usual and your car will be charged during your normal scheduled hours.

The only difference is that your charging may be stopped briefly for one, or both, of the following reasons

  • Grid Stability Schemes – Brief, infrequent adjustments during grid stress events (eg. Short pauses).
  • Demand Flexibility Schemes – Short adjustments to move grid demand away from peak times.
  • These adjustments are minimal and temporary. They won’t impact your ability to charge your EV.

Your charge will stop and start during its scheduled charging period but there should be no noticeable difference in terms of completed charge percentage by the time your scheduled charging has finished.

What do I need to get started?

To participate in vecFLEX rewards you must:

  • Be 18+ and GB resident
  • Have an evec home charger connected to the internet (VEC01, VEC03 and EDC01 only)
  • Have a smart electricity meter (SMETS1 or SMETS2) which has been communicating with the DCC for at least 30 days
    • Don’t have one yet? Contact your energy supplier and they’ll install one for free!
  • Opt-in and consent to share meter data with our grid services partner, Axle
  • Opt-in and consent to share half-hourly smart meter data
  • Not be enrolled in similar grid services with another provider

How can I opt out?

You can opt out of vecFLEX at any time by emailing vecflex@evec.co.uk with the subject line “Opt out – vecFLEX”

How is my data used?

We only share necessary details (email, address, MPAN, smart meter readings, device data) with our authorised flexibility scheme operators and partners to deliver the service and calculate rewards.

Data is processed securely under the Smart Energy Code and only after you provide consent.
Full details can be found in our privacy policy and in the vecFLEX beta terms and conditions

Am I eligible?

Check if you already have one

  • Look at your current meter.
  • SMETS1 and SMETS2 are digital meters with a screen and usually have a communications hub.
  • If unsure, contact your energy supplier, they can confirm.
    Contact your energy supplier
  • Smart meters are installed by your electricity supplier at no upfront cost under the UK Smart Meter rollout.
  • Request a SMETS2 meter (the latest version) for full compatibility with flexibility services like vecFLEX.
    Book an installation
  • Your supplier will arrange an appointment for a qualified engineer to replace your old meter.
  • Installation usually takes about an hour and is free.
    Ensure connectivity
  • SMETS2 meters communicate via the DCC network, so make sure your property has coverage.
  • If you have SMETS1, ask if it’s enrolled in the DCC, many are being upgraded remotely.

Why SMETS2 matters for vecFLEX

SMETS2 meters provide half-hourly data securely via the DCC, which is required for grid flexibility schemes.

SMETS1 may work if upgraded, but SMETS2 is the standard for new installations.
